What is Naloxone (Narcan)?

Naloxone is a medication used to rapidly reverse opioid overdoses. It works by binding to the same receptors in the brain as opioids, effectively blocking their effects. Naloxone can restore normal breathing and consciousness in someone who has overdosed on opioids, such as heroin or prescription pain medications.

It is often administered as an injection or a nasal spray and is commonly carried by emergency responders, healthcare providers, and sometimes by individuals at risk of an opioid overdose. Naloxone is considered a safe and effective intervention, and its availability has been expanded in many places to help combat the opioid crisis.
